The Lost Girls

In July of last year, Heather Young's novel The Lost Girls was released.  It revolves around the stories of Lucy and Justine. Back in the summer of 1935, Lucy's six-year-old sister went missing at their lakeside vacation home. Lucy, her older sister, and her mother all stay at this lake house, hoping for the return of Emily Evans.  Sixty years later after Lucy's death, her great-niece Justine, moves into the house with her two daughters, in hopes of escaping her abusive ex-boyfriend.  Just before Lucy's death she wrote the story of that summer in a letter for Justine.

I came across this book right after Christmas, when I was scouring Barnes and Noble for something new--I've been trying to read things I wouldn't normally pick up, such as this. It was, I think, around $10 and the blurb sounded interesting so I figured "why not?"  I'm really glad that I picked it up! It was a really interesting read and it went very quickly. I liked the characters and the detail put into every scene. My favorite chapters were the ones centered around the 1935 summer, they were incredibly interesting moments. My only source of disappointment was the ending. I felt so sad that I didn't get a bigger victory at the end. I wanted a little more from it. Though, I do see how it works with the subject matter.  Either way, for the author's debut I'd say she did amazingly. I recommend giving it a read, if you're interested. It was worth it.
