Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
SPOILER FREE
So I got this book two months shy of a year ago and I FINALLY READ IT. I'd heard some good reviews of it and thought the cover looked absolutely gorgeous (easily one of my favorite covers every). I didn't have any idea what it was about, to be honest. I didn't even read the description. This is not the way I would normally buy a book but I LOVE THAT COVER.
Anyway, to give you more to go on this book is about a girl named Mare Barrow who lives in a world where Reds and Silvers are segregated. Reds are the normal people who bleed red and have no special abilities. Silvers are superior, they bleed silver and have powers (some have fire, water, nature, metal, etc.). They control society while the Reds are treated as the slaves. In this world, as a Red, if you don't have a job before you turn eighteen you have to go to war.
Basically Mare, as a theif in her village trying to help her family, is pretty much ready to give into the current family tradition (falling in line after her father and older brothers) by going to war. However, by chance of fate she ends up with a job working for the Royal family.
I would continue the description with the significance of this but I don't want to give anything else away.
I have some feelings about this lovely book.
When I first started reading it, I was unsure. I had waited nearly a year to decide I wanted to read it. It wasn't until chapter eight that I was like "yes, this is interesting I want to keep going" and I think that is because it opens up with a ton of information all at one time, which is fine because it establishes the world. The thing about all that info for me was that even though it was in front of me I didn't fully process all of it until I read through the book (and I still don't fully remember a good portion of it).
Once it picked up at chapter eight I feel like it kept a rather steady incline towards the climax and I like the way Victoria Aveyard wrote it. I felt like each moment (or chapter) had some sort of purpose. There were a couple moments in the middle that things got a bit turned around, I think that might be because there was too much description.
I have to say I haven't ever run into a love triangle (square?) where I couldn't decide on a clear preference (I mean that was until the end of this one for those of you who've read it. AND with the exception of her childhood friend who I'm still not sure is even a love interest...?) There were moments when I was like "omg it's him" for both of them throughout the story. Now that I've finished it though I know who I prefer, of course.
But talking about the book generally, I really enjoyed it. It was definitely a good read and I can't wait to get the next one. I read this one within two days and definitely can't complain. I also loved how things are never what they seem in this book, it's very cool.
